The procedure is the same as for 12L14—only, except that the steel does not alloy with the lead during the process. The addition of lead improves the machinability of 11L17 when compared to 1117. At the same time, increased hardenability results from the manganese content. During the machining process, lead is only retained in its elemental state, and it disperses within the steel’s structure, allowing the chips to break off more easily.
